At the invitation of the South Australian Government, Carnegie Mellon University opened its campus in Adelaide in 2006. It was the first international university to establish in Australia.

As well as accreditation through the American system, degrees awarded at Carnegie Mellon University in Australia are fully accredited by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA). Programs delivered in Australia all meet the requirements of the Australian Qualifications Framework.
